Spiral Apple Dumplings

Ingredients:
 
Sauce
2 c

water
margarine or butter
ground cinnamon
ground nutmeg
Dough
2 c
2 tsp
1/2 tsp
3/4 c
2/3 c
all-purpose flour
baking powder
salt
shortening
milk
Filling
1/4 c
1/2 tsp
3/4 c
granulated sugar
ground cinnamon
shredded, peeled cooking apples (3 to 4 medium), such as Golden Delicious, Rome, Granny Smith, Jonathan, or Newton Pippin
Procedure:

Preheat oven to 350ºF.

Sauce:
1.  In a large saucepan, combine 2 cups sugar, the water, margarine, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg.
2.  Bring to boiling and boil for 5 minutes; set aside (should have about 2 cups sauce).

Dough:
1.  In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
2.  Using a pastry blender, cut in shortening until pea-size.
3.  Make well in center.
4.  Add milk all at once.
5.  Stir just until moistened.
6.  Knead dough on a lightly floured surface 10 to 12 strokes or until nearly smooth.
7.  Roll out to 12x10-inch rectangle.

Filling:
1.  Combine sugar and cinnamon; set aside.
2.  Sprinkle apples evenly over dough.
3.  Sprinkle with sugar mixture.

Assembly:
1.  Roll dough into spiral, starting from a long side.
2.  Pinch seam to seal.
3.  Cut into twelve 1-inch-thick pieces.
4.  Place pieces in a 13" x 9" x 2" baking pan.
5.  Pour sauce over dumplings.
6.  Bake about 50 minutes or until golden.

Makes 12 servings.

They look like a cinnamon roll but are actually like a pastry!
